UntroD Capital Asia Backs Teragen Energy’s $6M Pre-Seed to Commercialize a New Class of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
UntroD Capital Asia has invested in Teragen Energy’s oversubscribed $6 million pre-seed round. The round was co-led by BEVC and Energy Capital Ventures, with participation from AP Ventures, AIC Ventures, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and UntroD Capital. Proceeds will accelerate commercialization of Teragen’s next-generation solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.
The Problem: Power Demand Has Outrun the Grid Capacity
AI compute, high-density edge data centers and industrial automation are arriving faster than utilities can connect them. The binding constraint is interconnection, not generation: grid connection timelines run 36 to 84 months, while a data center gets built in 12 to 24. Developers finish the asset and then wait on a utility calendar they don’t control.
So operators have started building their own power. Behind-the-meter generation was once the contingency plan; for anyone who needs to energize on their own schedule, it is now part of the base design. But every onsite option available today asks for something in return. Diesel gensets and first-generation microturbines bring local emissions, fuel-price exposure, a maintenance burden, and a footprint that urban edge sites cannot spare. Commercial solid oxide fuel cells clear the emissions hurdle at a price most projects can’t justify.
Teragen's Approach
Spun out of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Teragen Energy builds compact, fuel-flexible fuel cell systems for energy-intensive sites. The architecture, co-invented by CEO Dr. Ruofan Wang, pairs materials and metallurgy advances with modular engineering:
- High power density built for space-constraint sites. High output per unit of floor space and high electrical efficiency, sized to fit behind-the-meter environments where land is the scarce input.
- Fuel flexibility without local pollution. Runs on natural gas, hydrogen blends or clean alternative fuels.
- Modular and load-following. Systems scale by module, follow dynamic load, and leave open pathways to carbon capture and integrated long-duration storage.
The Path Forward
The interconnection problem is not just in the US. In Japan, infrastructure bottlenecks have pushed major data center and chip foundry projects out to 2029 despite $28 billion of committed investment from global technology companies, and data centers are expected to reach roughly 7% of power load in the Tokyo and Kansai regions by 2030. Singapore, meanwhile, drew 93.1% of its fuel mix from natural gas in the first half of 2025. The $6 million will expand Teragen’s manufacturing and test infrastructure, grow the core engineering team, and fund initial commercial pilots with edge data center operators, industrial sites and utility partners. UntroD will support the company through its industrial network, focusing on supply chain partnerships, pilot customer introductions and market entry.
